Ruakākā Beach, Bream Bay

Ruakākā Beach is the northern end of the 13km sweeping expanse of white sand that is Bream Bay, with the back drop of the dramatic Whangārei Heads on the eastern skyline. It is popular for a range of water activities including surfing and kite surfing. Lifeguards patrol in summer, we recommend you swim between the flags. Ruakākā Surf Lifesaving patrols in summer, hosting beach education days and surf lifesaving competitions throughout the year.

The Ruakākā Wildlife Refuge is located at the Ruakākā River mouth and is a breeding area for the New Zealand dotterel and variable oystercatchers. It is also a major habitat for godwits.
