Ruakākā and Marsden Cove


Ruakākā is a beachside residential area with a mix of holiday and permanent homes. Ruakākā Beach is part of Bream Bay, a sweeping 13 kilometre expanse of white sand and waves popular for a range of water activities including surfing and kite surfing.

Ruakākā Town Centre

The Ruakākā Town Centre is the heart of Bream Bay where you’ll find everything you need, including cafes and restaurants, supermarket and retails stores, childcare services, the community library, sports ground and other professional services. The Ruakākā Recreation Centre offers gym facilities and squash courts, and provides a space for community activities including zumba, pilates, line dancing and fitness and music clubs.

Surf Lifesaving

Ruakākā Surf Life Saving patrols in summer and hosts beach education days and surf life saving competitions throughout the year.

Marsden Cove Marina & Village

Marsden Cove is a world class 230 berth marina with all tide and weather access to and from the ocean via a deep water harbour, along with a marine service precinct, public boat ramps and fuel berths. The Marina village has a waterside cafe and a handful of stores for your convenience.

TheMarsden Cove Marina Market is held on the last Sunday monthly through summer and autumn.

One Tree Point

An inner harbour community, the orginal village next to Marsden Cove on the west side of Whangārei Harbour is enjoyed for its sheltered swimming beaches, easy access to local fishing spots and dramatic view of Mount Manaia across the harbour.

Uretiti Beach

Just a few hundred metres off State Highway One, this popular beach has a Department of Conservation campground nestled in the sand dunes back from the beach. Naturists use the beach area to the south of the camp.

Just for Birdwatchers...

Lesser knots, Australasian gannets, white-fronted tern, a variety of shorebirds and very special migratory birds like the NZ dotterel and Eastern Bar-tailed godwits make their home at the Ruakākā Wildlife Refuge.

"And we're off!"

Ruakākā Racing ‘Where the Turf meets the Surf” is a unique all weather racecourse barely a furlong inland from the beach. Race days are held throughout the year and in summer, the Club hosts family events. Watch the horses train on the beach in the early-morning.

Catch a brown trout

The Wilson Dam, just off State Highway One, offers great fly fishing or spinning for anglers. Boats aren’t allowed but the dam offers excellent shore-based winter fishing and is stocked annually.
