Cool off at the Whangārei Aquatic Centre
Published on 08 December 2025
If you're looking for ways to keep cool or just want to enjoy some time by the water, the Whangārei Aquatic Centre offers a range of activities in the heart of town, right beside the Hātea River. With several pools, a fitness centre, and a cafe on site, you'll find options to suit all ages and abilities.
1) Zoom down the hydroslides
Admission to the pools includes access to the hydroslides, suitable for anyone 8 years and older. It's a fun way to spend an afternoon and try something a little different with family or friends.
2) Learn to swim with SwimMagic Swim School
The SwimMagic Swim School runs lessons for people of all ages—from babies as young as 6 months through to adults. Whether you're brushing up on technique, learning water safety, or simply getting more comfortable in the water, there's guidance available for every stage.
3) Relax in the spa pool
Unwind in the warm waters of the spa pool. The spa pool sits at 39°C, offering a spot for some quiet rest or to soothe tired muscles. It's worth keeping your head above water, taking breaks every fifteen minutes, and staying hydrated for a safe soak.
4) Outrun the inflatable Aquarun obstacle course
Did you ever watch the TV show Wipeout and think, I could do that? Here's your chance! During the school holidays, the inflatable Aquarun is set up daily between 12.30pm and 2.30pm. It's open to confident swimmers aged 8 and up who want to give the obstacle course a go. Make sure Mum is videoing your best wipeout!
5) Celebrate your big day
If you're planning a birthday, the centre has three different areas that can be booked for group celebrations. This can make organising a kids' get-together straightforward, with plenty of space for play.
6) Practice your manu ahead of the Z Manu World Champs
There are designated bombing areas in both the Wave Pool and, weather permitting, the outside Dive Pool (open 10am–2pm daily during the school holidays). For those keen to brush up on their manu technique, these spots offer room to practise - especially with the Z Manu World Champs Official Qualifier taking place at the Whangārei Aquatic Centre on Saturday 17 January 2026. Join one of the Push Play Manu Sessions on Saturday 10 January 2026 for some extra time in the air!
Whether you're after an energetic day with the kids or a quiet soak, make the most of summer in Whangārei! Thank you to the Whangārei Aquatic Centre for providing this blog (and keeping us cool).
