There's something special about running in Whangārei. Whether you're just getting started or training for your next big event, our district offers a stunning variety of tracks that keep things interesting, scenic, and challenging in all the right ways. These trails are well-loved by local runners and have become favourites for those building strength, enjoying the scenery, or training for events.

Here are five of our favourite spots to lace up and run:

1. Hātea Loop (Huarahi o te Whai)

This flat 4.2km loop around the Town Basin is ideal for all kinds of runs — from steady pace sessions to interval training. With water views, public art, and a safe, well-lit path, it's also home to Whangārei's Parkrun every Saturday at 8am starting at the lift bridge car park.

Where to find it: The Hātea Loop Shared Path is easily accessible from a range of Town Basin carparks and can be run in either direction.

2. Parihaka Summit (via Mair Park)

One of the best hill sessions in town. Starting from Mair Park, this trail winds through native bush before reaching the summit of Parihaka, where panoramic views of Whangārei await. It's a great way to build strength and get some trail time without heading too far from the city.

Where to find it: Parking for Mair Park is located on Rurumoki Street. The summit of Parihaka can be reached via the Ross Track or the Dobbie track.

3. Whangārei Falls to A H Reed Memorial Park

This track blends natural beauty with smooth trail surfaces, perfect for easy paced runs or mid-week shakeouts. The return trip is about 5km, taking you past the majestic Whangārei Falls and through the tranquil canopy walk at A H Reed.

Where to find it: Access this section of the Hātea River Walkway at either Otuihau Whangārei Falls, or from A H Reed Memorial Park.

4. Glenbervie Forest

If you love trails, this is your spot. Glenbervie offers endless options for trail runners - soft pine-covered paths, varied terrain, and total escape from traffic. Perfect for weekend long runs or sharpening your cross-country skills. Glenbervie Forest is also home to the Glenbervie Mountain Bike Trail Network, which is strictly bike only due to their narrowness and specificity, so make sure you stick to the roads to avoid accidents!

Where to find it: Parking and access is off Maruata Road in Glenbervie.

5. Mount Manaia Track

This one is not for the faint-hearted — but it's absolutely worth it. Located out at Whangārei Heads, the Mt Manaia Track is a tough, stair-heavy climb that rewards runners with jaw-dropping views over the harbour and Bream Bay. It's a powerful mental and physical challenge, ideal for those looking to push their limits.

Where to find it: Access to Mt Manaia is via the carpark on Whangarei Heads Road; look for the signs for Mount Manaia Club.
