A local foodie’s guide to Whangārei
Published on 15 August 2025
After years as a Growth Advisor at Northland Inc, supporting some of Tai Tokerau's incredible hospitality businesses (a dream role for a passionate foodie), David Templeton has now retired. With the luxury of time, he's enjoying the chance to leisurely explore and savour all the flavours Whangārei has to offer.
Here's David's guide to the best coffee, sweet treats, hidden gems, and a few nostalgic bites across our beautiful district.
My favourite Whangārei coffee spot is...
"My go-to is Sabio Roastery and Cafe. Their cappuccino is always perfectly balanced and full of flavour — it's never missed the mark. And if I feel like treating myself, their homemade health balls are great for guilt-free indulgence."
Where to find it: Sabio Roastery and Café, 148 Lower Dent Street, Town Basin. A relaxed spot for both serious coffee drinkers and casual catchups. Pair your coffee with something delicious from their cabinet!
My favourite date night or celebration spot is...
"Schnappa Rock in Tūtūkākā is our go-to for special occasions. Nick, Dean and the team never disappoint with their great service, exceptional food, and a solid wine list. I can't go past the pāua wontons and ceviche of fresh, local, line-caught fish with avocado and crispy corn."
Where to find it: Schnappa Rock, 11 Marina Road, Tūtūkākā. Be sure to book ahead for weekends in summer, it's popular with both locals and visitors alike!
My favourite hidden gem in Whangārei is...
"Since it opened a few months ago, we've loved Kai Toi on the Hihiaua Peninsula (in the old "Afare" building). The fit-out is beautiful, the space welcoming, and the aroha is felt from the moment you're greeted. The manaaki shown by every staff member makes every visit a great experience; it's a must-stop spot when walking the Hātea Loop!
Where to find it: Kai Toi, 56-58 Herekino Street (Hihiaua Peninsula). Perfect for a relaxed brunch with a strong focus on local ingredients and warm hospitality.

My favourite sweet treat in Whangārei is...
"A lovely fruit-flavoured gelato from Bocky Boo in the CBD is hard to beat. Light, refreshing, and perfect on a sunny afternoon."
Where to find it: Bocky Boo Gelato, 7 James Street, Whangārei. Offering fresh, seasonal flavours and made with love, it's an easy stop while wandering the city centre.
My favourite cafe with a view is...
"A table on the balcony at Aqua is hard to beat. Their menu works for all-day dining with a fantastic range of choices, often highlighting local ingredients. Sitting outside with a cocktail or glass of wine in the early evening is the perfect way to soak in the view of the Hātea River, the marina, and the striking architecture of the Canopy Bridge."
Where to find it: Aqua Restaurant and Bar, Hundertwasser Art Centre, Town Basin. A prime spot for people-watching and sunset views, with an atmosphere that's as inviting as the menu.
My favourite local produce to cook with is...
"This is tough because we're blessed with so much choice, especially at the Whangārei Growers Market and Origin Northland in Waipū. Last week's lunch was a beauty: freshly cooked beetroot from Robbie and Simone's veggie stall, Better than Fetta cheese from Belle Chèvre Creamery, and extra virgin Frantoio olive oil from Echo Valley Olives in Mangawhai. Yum!"
Where to find it: Whangārei Growers Market, 17 Water Street, every Saturday morning. Origin Northland, 6 The Centre, Waipū, showcasing Northland produce and artisan goods from across NZ.

My favourite fish and chips in Whangārei are...
"Hook Inn Fresh Fish and Takeaway in Kamo, the fish is always fresh and the chips perfectly crispy."
Where to find it: Hook Inn Takeaways, 567 Kamo Road, Kamo. Ideal for grabbing a classic dinner to enjoy by the beach.
My favourite local food hero is...
"So many, but one person that really stands out is Jennifer Rodrigue from Belle Chevre Creamery. She and her husband Dave have created an incredible goat's cheese range, and their bonbons are an indulgent treat not to be missed. They also launched Origin Northland in Waipū, a must-visit for anyone wanting to taste Northland's best."
A Whangārei food memory I treasure is...
"If you've been in Whangārei for a long time, you might remember Timothy's! On Vine Street in the 70s, Timothy's was the place for a 'posh' night out. I remember some great nights at Plusonne on Bank Street, which was run by a character named Rosie, known for playfully 'abusing' diners (in the nicest possible way!). It was always an exciting night with amazing food."
If you're hungry in Whangārei, there's no shortage of great coffee, delicious meals, and passionate people behind every plate. Savour Northland, Northland’s signature food and beverage festival, is set to return with flavour, flair and unmistakable regional pride. Running from 1-31 October, it's the perfect time to get out there, try something new, and enjoy the flavours of our district!
Thank you to David Templeton for sharing his foodie favourites.
