Sorry, this event has been and gone.

Expressive, gestural and vibrant brushwork recalls psychological impacts on real people in real life and fictitious events. A must-see exhibition by a very talented emerging Northland artist.

Meet the artist: 10am - 4pm Sunday 18th, 25th Feb and 4th March.

Alice Astell is an emerging contemporary figurative painter based in the Far North of New Zealand.  Her recent work combines imagery from 16th century Italian paintings with real life people and places she has known. Her main interest lies in portraying human frailty and emotion through expression, gesture and colour; leaving possible narrative interpretations to the viewer to ponder.

Alice's background in criminal law is also a recurring theme in her work, with lively courtroom scenes and troubled jurors and defendants often depicted. Her rich and evocative use of colour, expressive brushwork and psychologically intriguing images capture your gaze and encourage you to share in her love of colour and to contemplate what's going on in the scene portrayed.

Alice studied formal drawing and painting at the Slade and Byam Shaw Schools of Art in London before attaining a BA (Hons) Degree in Fine Art (Painting) from Wimbledon School of Art. After several years of exhibiting in different galleries in London and Australia, she re-trained as a lawyer specialising in criminal and police law.

In 2014 she moved to the Far North where she now paints full-time. Recent exhibitions include the NZ Art Show 2017, 'Modern Life' at the Turner Centre in Kerikeri and regular group exhibitions at Studio 19 in Kerikeri.

In 2017 she was shortlisted as a Finalist for the Cliftons Art Prize 2017 (exhibiting at Cliftons in Queen St, Auckland in Nov-Dec 2017) and the Hibiscus and Bays Area Art Award 2017 (exhibiting at the Mairangi Arts Centre in Auckland in Nov-Dec 2017).
