Sandy Bay on the Tutukākā Coast, is an iconic surf beach suitable for all abilities, that has been the home of the Polar Bear Surf Classic, everyone’s favourite winter surf competition, for over 30 years. The best waves are on a northerly to north east swell. Park up, unload and step straight onto the sand and into the water.
Strong rips can form and there is no lifeguarding service so please take care. The south end of the beach is generally more sheltered for swimming.
Sandy’s is also popular for a family day at the beach, picnics and relaxing in the shade of the large pohutukawa trees.
