Ocean Beach, Whangārei Heads

At the end of Whangārei Heads peninsula is Ocean Beach, looking out to the Pacific Ocean and with great surf and dramatic sand dunes; it’s a local favourite for surfing, body-boarding or just relaxing. Dolphins are often seen just offshore.

Whangārei Heads Surf Lifeguards patrol in summer and strong rips can form - please swim between the flags. Start or finish the fantastic day hike, Te Whara Track here. A memorial to commemorate the sinking of the only navy ship lost to enemy action in New Zealand waters during World War II can be seen at the lookout. Over the dunes to the north is Kauri Mountain Beach, a remote and wild 5km long beach.

Allow 45 minutes drive time from Whangārei city.
