Six fun ways to get active and meet new people in Whangārei

Published on 15 July 2026

Keen to find new things to do in Whangarei and expand your social circle while you're at it? There are plenty of activities that go beyond your usual gym session.

From treasure hunts and climbing walls to community runs and flying discs, these six hobbies are a great way to stay active, discover new places, and connect with like-minded locals. You might just find your new favourite weekend hobby!

1) Start your Saturday right with parkrun

Every Saturday at 8am, locals gather either beneath Te Matau a Pohe Bridge for Whangārei parkrun or in Tarewa Park for the Raumanga Stream parkrun. The free, timed 5km events welcomes walkers, joggers, runners and volunteers of all ages and abilities. Race the clock or enjoy a walk with friends (coffee in hand).

Register online beforehand, bring your barcode to get a result, and enjoy the friendly community vibes. Find more info on the parkrun website.

2) Go treasure hunting with geocaching

Geocaching turns everyday walks into a real-life treasure hunt. Using the free Geocaching app and GPS on your phone, you can search for hidden caches across Whangārei's parks, reserves and coastal tracks.

It's a fun activity for families, friends or solo explorers, and a great opportunity to join a community of adventurers. Join the local Facebook group to meet fellow geocachers and keep up to date with local events.

3) Find your way with orienteering

A mix of navigation and outdoor problem-solving, orienteering challenges you to find checkpoints using a map. Beginners can explore the permanent course at Parihaka Reserve, making it a great way to discover local tracks while challenging your brain and body.

The Whangarei Orienteering Club meets regularly to tackle new courses (both urban and rural) and offers training and fun events. Be warned - you might get a smidge muddy on some courses! The events have a range of difficulties, and cater to everyone, from first-time families to competitive runners who BYO compass.

4) Reach new heights with bouldering

No ropes, no harnesses, just climbing walls and padded mats. Boulder House Whangārei offers climbs for all experience levels with a welcoming, social atmosphere.

Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced climber, you can challenge yourself at your own pace. It's a great way to build strength, try something new and meet like-minded people. Boulder House often hosts themed events, as well as classes and coaching. BYO climbing shoes or hire some on site.

5) Join a social sports club

Getting active is even better when you're with a team! Whangārei has a wide range of social sports clubs, making it easy to get involved no matter your age, skill level or sport of choice. From netball and rugby to cricket, football, and waka ama, there's always a team looking for new players.

Many clubs offer casual grades and social competitions, making it a great way to stay active, learn a new skill and meet new people. Sport Northland have an online directory of local clubs

6) Give frisbee/disc golf a try

Disc golf is growing fast! The rules are simple: throw a flying disc into a target basket in as few throws as possible. Gather some friends or join the local community for a relaxed day outdoors; it's a fun way to enjoy the scenery while testing your aim.

Whangārei has a couple of courses to explore, including a nine-hole waterfront course at Port Nikau and a six-hole course at Tikipunga Sports Grounds.

Trying something new is one of the best ways to experience more of Whangārei, and there's no shortage of ways to get involved. Your next hobby could be closer to home than you think!
