About Time’ is a for-real modern jazz trio playing modern swing funk fusion jazz… from legends Chick Corea to Bill Evans and more…plus originals.
Friday 6PM. Start of the weekend, unwind at the upstairs Butter Bank. It’s a stylie, fresh venue. Come along with your mates and enjoy some live modernjazz.
We’re local Whangarei/Ngunguru musicians with years of passion for interesting jazz - I’m Matt Hennessy, a true jazz drummer (soft boom and bash); Matt Watson (not the intrepid fisherman by the same name, darn) is accomplished on both acoustic and electronic and also keyboards, trumpet, flugelhorn. To keep it all together is John Fraser (the Ngunguru local) on electric and stand up bass. Yes, we all work in tech by day so playing music is a creative break.
We play a wide range of jazz. We put some very rough cut homemade video on YouTube to show our range of sophisticated yet cruisey jazz. Forgive the quality but you’ll get the idea we play standards, swing, Latin, funk, bebop, Coltrane, Davis, Corea, Evans and between.
You can become a fan (click the Like button) on our Facebook page - About Time Jazz Trio. You’ll hear about what we are up to between gigs like working on our 3 CD release from Tulip Room Studio. Recording was in response to request from gig fans to ‘take us home’.
See you upstairs at Butter Bank, Whangarei. We’re conversation-friendly and aim to please jazz - food - drink lovers.

Butterbank, the newest bar venture in Whangarei and ideally located on Bank Street is the premier bar and restaurant in Northland. Native wood and leather subtly combine with open brickwork and mirrored surrounds to create an aesthetic and social atmosphere nothing short of uniquely exquisite. The decor’s excellence is matched wtih superbly trained staff and designer cocktails made by a world class and award winning mixologist. Coupled wtih the finest selection of spirits in Northland is the delectable selection of food ranging from authentic tapas to succulent stonebaked pizza produced by the local head chef.
“Walk away from the city centre and sink into wide worn brown leather seats and order a glass of Merlot. Ultimately understated, this hideaway is a welcome spot for laxing out. The option to sit outside on summer days with friends enjoy a beer or Pinot Gris sets a very relaxed tone around the cities corner. Alternatively, rage the nights away in the packed bar with plenty going on.” – Donna ( A Menumania review)
“Have recently moved to Whangarei and didn’t think there was anywhere decent to go out and then we discovered this place, great atmosphere, good tunes and a great drink selection, will definately be coming back!” – H (A Menumania review)
