Creative

The creative industries arts sector is a key part of the Northland economy and contributes to a vital and innovative regional community.

Whangarei is home to a diverse and vibrant creative community working in a range of media. There are over 350 “professional” artists in the district earning part or all of their living from sale of their work. There are also a diversity of common interest and support groups for arts and crafts. Whangarei has developed its own unique arts identity which reflects the history and cultures that make Whangarei special.

The Whangarei–based Arts Promotion Trust was established in 2000 to provide practical on the ground support for the creative community which resulted in an environment which saw Northland artists thrive and the community benefit from their success.

Cultural tourism is an integral part of the experience that Northland offers. An art trail that guides visitors throughout the region along the Twin Coast Discovery Highway has been developed.

A creative industries arts strategy has been developed, by stakeholders from around the region, to identify initiatives to help Northland artists thrive, to address challenges the sector as a whole faces, to lift the aspirations of its artists and to ensure Northland’s artists and creatives are highly valued.
